Why the castle and the vineyards go hand in hand

From the great bastion, the first thing you see below is the vineyard. The villages of the Wine Route line the foothills of the Vosges, just a few kilometres apart: Bergheim, Ribeauvillé, Hunawihr, Riquewihr, then Kaysersberg and Eguisheim to the south. A tour that goes up to the castle without stopping would miss what you can see from the keep. All the day trips I compare have understood this, but they don’t choose the same villages or the same order. The overview of the six tours is elsewhere; here I’m focusing on the vineyards.

Who stops where

Riquewihr is the common village. The guided day trip from Strasbourg includes a half-hour introduction and one hour of free time; the shared van and private tour allow one hour for lunch; the small group from Colmar offers two hours of guided and free time; the panoramic coach spends 1 hr 45, the longest. Only the tour from Basel skips it, opting for Ribeauvillé instead.

Eguisheim is only visited on tours from Colmar: 45 minutes with the coach, 1 hr 30 of guided tour with the small group. Kaysersberg-Vignoble, 45 minutes, is a stop on the coach tour only. Ribeauvillé, with its three castles above (Saint-Ulrich, Girsberg, Haut-Ribeaupierre), gets 1 hr 30 on the day trip from Basel, with an optional tasting. Tours from Colmar are therefore the ones that see the most villages; the tours from Colmar page compares them side by side.

The two tasting stops

The panoramic coach ends with an hour at a local winemaker’s, after the castle and before returning to Colmar. This is the cellar version: you walk through the courtyard, taste, and leave with or without a bottle. The small group from Colmar does its tasting at a wine bar, for one hour, between Riquewihr and the castle. Karen wrote that it was the perfect ending; Amy called it a fantastic wine stop. Both are included in the programme, meals are not. On tours from Strasbourg, there’s no organised tasting; you drive along the Wine Route and taste what you like during your free time in Riquewihr. The tour from Basel offers an optional tasting in Ribeauvillé.

The Sigolsheim Necropolis

Between Kaysersberg and Riquewihr, the panoramic coach stops for ten minutes at the Sigolsheim National Necropolis, on a hill surrounded by vineyards. Ten minutes isn’t a visit, it’s a moment of silence and a view. I find the stop fitting: you don’t cross this corner of Alsace just looking at half-timbered houses. No other tour includes it.

The seasons of the Wine Route

The grape harvest, from late August to October depending on the year, is when the villages smell of grapes and the streets fill with tractors. It’s also when eight-seater vans book up on weekends. The Christmas markets, from late November to December, transform Riquewihr and Colmar; the shared van from Strasbourg has a dedicated version. The castle switches to shorter hours with a midday closure in November-December, and entry is free on the first Sunday of the month from November to March. What the castle adds to a day among the vineyards

An hour or so of cool breezes, staircases, and a bird’s-eye view in the middle of a day spent wandering through narrow streets. The contrast works. After the fortress, you spot the villages you’ve just left from the road. And the castle makes more sense once you’ve seen up close the 16th-century houses it towers over: Wilhelm II had it rebuilt between 1900 and 1908 as an imperial monument, not a village.
