Can you eat at Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle?

Yes: a café-restaurant, Le 757, is located at the top of the car park, and a small snack bar with a view is available at the castle. A covered picnic area is open from April to October. For a proper meal, the villages below—Orschwiller, Kintzheim, Saint-Hippolyte and Sélestat—have restaurants; excursions include a lunch break in Riquewihr or Colmar.

I’ll be honest: no one comes to Haut-Koenigsbourg for the food. The 757 is handy, especially for a hot coffee after the chilly rooms, and the snack bar does the job for kids. My go-to when I visit with friends? A sandwich from Sélestat, eaten in the covered picnic area or on a bench by the bastion, followed by a proper meal in one of the villages along the Wine Route later in the afternoon. The schedule on how much time to allow helps you plan lunch.

None of the six excursions include meals. However, all of them allow free time for lunch: in Riquewihr on the day trips from Strasbourg, in Riquewihr or Colmar on the departures from Colmar, and in Colmar on the departure from Basel. Two of them also include a wine tasting at the end of the day, either at a winemaker’s or in a wine bar—I talk about it on the Wine Route page.

Insider tip

In November and December, the castle closes at midday. Have lunch at the 757 or in a village before heading up—not after.

A day with tasting

The small-group day trip from Colmar ends with an hour of wine tasting in a wine bar, after visiting Eguisheim, Riquewihr, and the castle.
