Which films were shot at Haut-Koenigsbourg?

Jean Renoir filmed part of The Grand Illusion (1937) at the castle, including the fortress-prison scenes with Jean Gabin, Pierre Fresnay, and Erich von Stroheim. Fifty years later, Jean-Pierre Mocky shot scenes from Agent Trouble (1987) here, featuring Catherine Deneuve and Richard Bohringer.

In The Grand Illusion, the castle stands in as the fortress where the imprisoned officers are transferred; its walls, courtyards, and staircases make for a far more convincing prison than any studio set, and the 1908 restoration was still almost brand new. When you climb the spiral staircases, you’ll understand why Renoir chose it—the route is described on the what to see page. Agent Trouble, by Mocky, uses it more briefly. I won’t mention other films shot here, as there’s a lot of misinformation about it.

A fun detail guides love to share: a replica of the castle exists at Berjaya Hills in Malaysia. The real one sits 757 metres above Orschwiller, and its history explains why it looks so cinematic.
